This essay is going to be based on the film the ‘Psycho’ which was realised in the year 1998, which was a remake of the original version in 1960. When we first watched the shower scene we came to realise that there was many different camera shots and also camera movements. I also came to realise that the there was many different Mise-en-scene. And in this essay I will be going into detail into different scenes, which have the most detail on. And images I can give a detailed response on.
The first image I would like to go into detail on is the one where it shows the shower head. Because the shower head looks rather old, it would suggest that the scene is placed in either an old house or a hotel room. This makes peoples tensions rises because it is unusual; and the shot is repeated throughout the sequence. The camera shot of this photo is a low angle shot; this is because it makes the person feel un-steady like they have no power over anything. Because this shot is dead bang in the middle it makes peoples eyes go straight to it like they are hypnotised and can not be pulled away from the water which is flowing out. The way the water is flowing out suggests that something is going to happen it creates a rise in the tension and more of a rhythm. The water symbolises someone cleansing themselves, whether it is the victim of even the killer. This makes the audiences tension rise because they know that something is going to happen, they just don’t know when. The Mise-en-scene of this shot is simply the shower itself, the image of the shot is a perspective shot, and it is how the person would see the shower from their point of view. This makes the audience feel like the film is more personal like it could happen to any other people.
Another shot which is significant when looking at the film is the close up on the knife. When you look at this scene you can see where the light source is coming from the top right hand corner. This makes the blade look more dangerous and life threatening then any normal circumstances. I wouldn’t say that this is an extreme close up of the blade because it doesn’t show enough detail of the person’s hand. The way the light is centred it makes peoples eyes drawn to the blade and it seems like nothing else matters at this moment in time, it makes people scared like they are alone and that they know they are going to die. The Mise-en-scene of this scene is simply that the film wants you to be locked on the blade. It wants you to feel nothing but the pain that the woman is going through. I would say that seeing this scene makes it clear that a killing is going to happen and that we can’t do anything to prevent it.
The shot of the woman lying down in the bath/shower is a high angled shot which gives people a sense of over powering and alone. We also get the sense of inferior this is because it makes people worry about the women because she is too weak to help herself out of this situation. The way she is crouched down the audience gets a sense of tension because she is in pain and can not help herself to fight of her killer, also because she was taken by surprise she didn’t have enough time to prepare herself or to call for help. What I learn from this scene is that the women is dieing and in a lot of pain. In this scene the director placed some Non-Digetic sounds in, this means that sounds were placed over the top of the original film, and example of this is her screams they are to perfect for what would be happening here if she was really getting stabbed.
In one of the scenes it jumps to the weather this shows the full violence which is happening here and that no one can stop it nor control it, that it is an unstoppable force. The Mise-en-scene of this shows the violence of the dark clouds and how strong the breeze will be and that once they have been set of on a frenzy they can not be stopped. This connects to the violence of the water women being killed. And that it is a force that can not be stopped. The camera shot which is being used here is one called jump shot this is because there is no reason for the weather to be mentioned but it is and that makes peoples tension rise.
The image of the drain and the blood flowing down it suggests that something terrible has happened and that it is too late for anyone to save her know. The camera shot of this scene is a close up because they want you to see everything all the blood that has been drained from this women’s body, and also because it is being washed away is makes people think that it is all over. She is dead. What I see from this image is that someone has died and it wasn’t a pretty death. The drain is an old version sort of like the shower head itself which brings me back to my first observation which was that this was probable an old house or a hotel room. This is what it ends up to be an old hotel room.
Another image I am going to talk about is the face itself, when the woman has died the way her eyes are watching. This builds the tension because the women’s eyes are locked on yours, and it makes you want to scream or look away. Normally it is the pretty people who get the most horrific deaths and this is another one of these stories. The mise-en-scene of this scene contains some props the only thing you can see is a towel of some sort in the very far side of the room, also there is some mise-en-scene which is lighting the light is quite blinding like someone who has just died. It fits in with the fact again that someone has died; it is all quite bright like it’s the last thing she will ever see. Overall, this scene is the most dramatic because of how the image comes together. It opens out from her eye and spines out into the face itself.
The final image I am going to talk about it the house itself , the way the house is laid out all in dark and it makes peoples tension rise because you don’t know what is going to happen next. It also adds mystery to the mise-en-scene because its all in black and the only thing which is lit up is the window light the lighting adds to the effect because it is only the window light which shows that it is an abandon hotel and not a lot of people go there to stay maybe because there is a bad story behind it and that something bad might have also happened there a long time ago, which just makes the house seems more sinister and scary looking every moment. I wouldn’t go into a hotel if it looked like that also it doesn’t look very pleasant outside which suggests that it hasn’t been looked after and that it has just been left out of control.
In conclusion I can tell that all of these images have something which makes them all quite mysterious and makes peoples tension rise, but it does have a good twist to it and therefore has a good storyline. And because I can analysis the camera shots more effectively it makes it a lot more fun to be able to take a film apart in more detail.
