Analysing Memento.

Analysing ‘Memento’

The film ‘Memento’ is a Physiological Thriller the reason why i think this is because of the different features that it contains; it also contains a lot of different emotions which will keep the audience on the edge of their seats.

When the film first begins we feel a sense of mystery and confusion, we can conote this because of the sound which builds in the opening scene, keeps people wanting to know what will be happening next. The simple effective font adds to the mystery, this is because it is bold and is clear, suggesting that something is going to happen which you wouldn’t except to happen, but when it does it will shock everybody.

The different camera shots add to the tension of this film. In the film ‘Memento’ it jumps from clip to clip, this is too adds tension, and makes people confused by what is really happening in the story. When the image goes to black and white it is suggesting that he is talking about his past, and his feeling during that time before he lost his memory, and also lost his wife.

The music is a Non-Digetic this means it has been placed on top of the film itself. This sound adds tension to the film; from this I can infer that something is going to happen, something that might have had a big affect on a person’s life. The sound which i could notice more was the ticking of the clock in the background this connotes that time is pasting by, this links to the drone in the background suggesting that because he has no memory, that his life is over. That all he can remember is hatred for someone he can not remember.
When the scene begins we see black and white, which connotes that time has passed by but also it adds to the tension suggesting that he doesn’t know where he is and anything which might have happened. This makes the audience feel sorry of him because they want him to be able to remember the one thing he wants most in all the world.

The fact that he places tattoes on his body, telling him of the next thing in his case to fine his wifes murderer. This makes people feel sorry and want to help him. Also when we the audience knows who the murderer is you just want to scream and yell and hope he hears you.

Preliminary Task !

Preliminary Task.

This is my very first filming in Media Studies. I thought it went pretty well and i enjoyed every moment of this. Being able to see what has to go on during the making of a film, this includes editing and making sure which all the different scenes fit together. There was 3 people in our group, Jack Coley who was our main Director, Hayley Woodland and me who played the main characters, Hayley was the Managering Director and then i was the Employee.

The most difficult part we came to realise was when we changed rooms, as you can see when i enter the room there is no sign against the door, which says 'Hayley Woodland, Managering Director.' We didn't know that we had made this mistake until we had started to edit. I remember me and Hayley laughing because we couldn't believe what we had done.
The different shots we tried to work with was a 'Pan Shot' which is where you follow a preson as they movie. A 'Extreme Close Up' which was used with the knocking of the door. When it came to editing we added 'Non-Digetic' sounds was the music and also the intercone which Jack did. Another editing we did was adding 'Transitions' to the movie, an example of this is the ending where we used a 'Fade To Black.'

The Non-Digetic sounds we thought should have been upbeat, so the audience knows something is about to happen. Also because it makes peoples tension rise as they are waiting for what happens next.

The most difficult part of our Perliminary Task, was the pan. This was because we couldn't keep the camera still enough whenever we tried to turn it. As a result of this when it came to editing we decided to make the shot more smoother, this resulting in it missing my head off as i'm walking down the hallway. When me and Hayley realised this we were a little annoyed and we were debating whether to try and redo the shot just one more, but in the end sir said it was ok and to leave it.

Another shot we found difficult was getting the speed right as i'm going up the stairs, we did lots of retakes for this, trying to determine how fast i should walk. We also had the problem of people walking past knowing that we were filming, this annoyed us a little because we would have to redue this section one again.

Another thing Me and Hayley found difficult was the disagreement we are meant to have. The main reason why this took a few takes is because Hayley would look at Jack or he would do something which would make her smile. This in total took about 7 takes when it should have only taken about 3. But this is one thing we learned when it comes to making a real movie, there will be a lot of laughs in the beginning.

The section which was the easiest was the very begining where Hayley yells for Jack to 'Send Her In' this only required one shot which we was happy with because it meant we could move on to the next part.

Story Board. Media Studies.

My Story Board For My Filming.

This is my story board for how we planned to set out our media recording. We came to realise that it need to be changed or it became difficult so we had no choice but to change it.

What made me design my Story board, this way was because it shows me enough detail on the process which i will be taking. And also it is showing me the body language which will be taking place during each scene.

Something that my group found the most difficult was the pan, when they followed me to the door, we found that we could not keep the movement on the same line. We found out that it would move which meant we had to do a lot of takes. Another thing we found difficult was the conversation/arguement which me and Hayley Woodland had to do. Somethings we said made us smile and also laugh. We realised that we had to be sensible and we had to make it seem really.

The Memento Review.

The Memento Review.

For the past couple of days we have been watching this film called 'Memento'. Here is my view on how i found the film.

When Sir first told us how the film went i was like this seems boring. Like something which wasnt very popular but it had a lot of different camera shots. Now that i have watched the film i realise that it is soooo much more difficult to understand than i first thought, the way it jumped from scene to scene made my head dizzy. But i am not saying it is not a good film, it is it is just i didn't think i was like that.  It was a lot different from what i imagened it would be, in some ways its better but in others it still made my head hurt.

The thing i liked about this film was the moral of the story, someone who has a short term memory lose is trying to find and kill the person who raped and murdered his wife. The way the husband was determine to find this man it makes me feel sorry for him and i feel his love, but it also makes me want to give him strength to carry on. It also makes you realise that people are not always not what they seem and because you have a condition does not mean you are totally useless.

Another thing i found effective about this film was how it went from black and white to colour depending on when it was taken. The black and white is him telling the story of how he used to live. When he talks about sammy, you feel unsure whether he if faking it or whether he is really like this, when you first see Sammy i thought he was faking it, a money skam i thought, but later on it becomes more clear that he really does have a short term memory lose.

The thing i did not enjoy about the film was that it jumped and after a while it was like he was repeating itself, and just as you got to see something new you saw how it joined to the other and then you would see the scene again.

The Happening – Without The Table:

The Happening – Without The Table:

When I look at my results using my table I can see that there is a lot of things which are needed to make up a movie, and from looking at my table I can see that the film ‘The Happening’ is the same as any other film.

The first thing I notice about the table and the film too, is the genre. I noticed that it is more of a thriller with a little bit of action on top. How this helps make the tension rise, is by adding a Non Digetic sound to the trailer. The sound is spooky and mysterious and because of this it puts people on the edge of their seats, like they don’t know what might be happening next. The way the music rises it like its hooking itself to you and will not let go.

Another thing I noticed about this film was the different sound which was either placed on top, which is a Non Digetic sound. And then there are the sounds which are recorded with the film, when you here the scream in the very beginning I think that this is a Non Digetic sound this is because it seems to posed and also that it fits the timeline of how everything happenings. Also if It was a proper scream the girl would have reacted differently, she would have been more shocked and worried about where the scream came from where as in the film it looks planned and not natural.

There are many different Denotations that I can see, but I am only going to pick one to explain. The one that I am going to talk about is that most of the people have fear in there eyes and I can defiantly feel there pain. This makes peoples tension rise because it makes people feel like they are really there and that it could happen to them at any moment. It is a personal view shot which means that it makes them feel like they are also in the movie and this is a good affect that thriller films make. Something that I can connote is that something painful and scary might happen, but I don’t know when. This again makes peoples tension rise because it makes people feel like they are on the edge of their seats, and also because you don’t know when it is going to happen, when it does happen it makes more of an effect when something does and it hits them more then it would normally.

The Mise-en-scene of the film is spooky and it also mysterious. The scene of the film has a big impact on the film this s because most of the scenes are isolated and this makes people watching the film feel more alone and venerable. Which makes the tension rise because they want to turn the film of but because of the music in the very beginning they are hooked, and can not get out of the trace, like they are being held against their will. One of the scenes when they are walking to the abandoned house, it’s all alone. Like no one is living it makes it feel deadly like something terrible might have happened here. Because it is all on its own and there are no other houses around it makes things feel more unnatural.

The audience for this film I would say is probably more for the older children, this is because you see violence and pain which people are suffering from. I think this is a good film because it makes you realise just what things could happen to the world, and that sometimes you cant help what happens, that nature sometimes has a way of taking back control on things that have already happen.

Media Studies: Task 4:

Media Studies: Task 4:

This is from the film ‘Titanic’ an Oscar winning production directed by James Cameron, and release in 1997.

The reason why I pick this film to analysis is because it has so many good things about it, and it is a well known film which has been watched by near enough everyone in the world.

When we look at this image we see Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Rose (Kate Winslet) looking deep into each others eyes and holding each other in a warming embrace. When we look at this photo we can see that these two people care a lot about each other, but because he is still so distant from her face this suggests that they can not be together. This image is a two shot, which means that it is showing two people in the image. It also looks a bit like an over the shoulder shot, the reason why I think this is because you are more looking over her should (like its her perspective) but you are seeing both of their reactions. This makes this scene seem more really and it makes tensions rise because you just want to know what happens next.

The scene of this image appears to be someone deep in the ship, somewhere that doesn’t really acquire rich people you can tell this because of the light in the background. It isn’t covered up and there is only one, if it was somewhere which was more popular then it would be covered with maybe a big chandelier, and their would be colours on the wall and there would be a lot of silver were on the tables, this scene does not have any which makes me suspect that this place is where the lower class would go.

Because of what they are both where suggests that they do not belong in this world and that they should be somewhere different from where they are now. I know this because of the dress Rose is wearing; it is to glittery for someone who doesn’t have a lot of money. When we look at Jacks clothes we can see that he is missing a bow tie which suggests that he doesn’t belong in the same world as Rose, it also suggests that sometimes the poorer people have more fun, I mean look at this image the girl he loves is dancing with him when she could be with all her higher class friends.

The Mise-en-scene of this image I think is the light, it makes peoples eyes draw to it. It is a cut away shot. This is when something is added to take your eyes away from what is really happening. Also when it comes to the light, because it is lit suggests that they are in somewhere which doesn’t have much light, bringing me back to my conclusion of them being somewhere deep in the ship, probably near the bottom too.

Media: The Happening Table.

Genre
(Is a type of category of film)
I think that the genre of this film is mostly Action/Thriller and then also a little bit of Sci-Fi as well. It could also be connected to war.
Mise-en-scene
(What you see in the scene)
Conventional way (a way which we would aspect) Low angles makes people feel venerable and makes the tension rise. Abrupting editing adds to the suspense and sometimes the drama. Unconventional, because you wouldn’t normally see a police man on the floor and not helping someone. Going to black and dissolve because it helps make the tension rise, paranormal things are going on. Rapid editing, white on black, intertextuality.

Sound
Digetic
(Sound and voice which has been recorded whilst on set)
Peoples conversations and then also silence. This would make peoples tension rise people of how it suddenly cuts them off, and then brings it back in.
None Digetic (Is when you get a recording and do a voice over)
The music which is being played in the background, this would help to build peoples tensions. Voice over. Different reactions.
Characters
(People that make up a movie)
The teacher is the main character, he’s seems to know how to look after himself and other people but he also can be scared.
Denotation
(What we see)
I see lots of sad faces and people with fear in their eyes, because they don’t know what is happening to themselves and other people.
Connotation
(What it could be, why is it used?)
Something dangerous could be happening to these people, or it could be happening to the whole world. Soothing to do with maybe the government or also something which is out of this world. Can hear guns, death, and dog police warnings.
Scene
The scene is mostly outside but some parts of it are placed inside. For example a classroom seeing the children sitting there. The way the trailer is set out makes the tension rise and creates an ideology because the mention of the bee’s and the people. This makes people want to watch more.
Moral of story
That something’s that happened can affect more people and not for a good thing, also that people do arrange to do things to the world. For example the government and terrorism. The moral of the story is that sometimes things can happened and people can not stop it, no matter how they try.
Audience
Older teenagers and mostly adults this is because they might be more interested with in something which might make them cringe. This is because ideology it mentions the un-known so this makes people want to see the end and to find out what happens.

About to start filming our little clip, i am looking forward to this and it makes media seem more really. When ever i look at a film i can see all the detail someone goes into to make a movie what it is really meant to be, i am also starting to understand and notice a different camera movements, i'm also starting to say them whilct my family are around :) It makes makes me laugh because i am really starting to learn what it takes to make a film.

Media Studies: Film Anaylsis.

Media Studies: Film Analysis:

This is an image taken from the film ‘Red Riding Hood’ the reason why I chose this is because it fit with the genre ‘Thriller’ and because there are a lot of things I can analysis with this image.

The first thing I am going to talk about is the Mise-en-scene, when I look at this image I can see the touch which shows that wherever this person is it is a dark place, and that there is no other light source. The way the touch is so bright it’s like it is trying to move your eyes away from what is really happening, this would be an example of a ‘Cut Away.’ A cut away shot is something which draws his eyes away from something which might also be happening in the scene, it makes people tension rise. But sometimes the shot is totally unnecessary but they add it in for effect.

When we look at the red of the fire this could sometimes represent blood and death, but it could also represent passion, forbidden love and a longing for someone. The way I see this image is death but passion building up inside of him, like he is in love but it is forbidden. This links it back to the red of the flames, painful and someone suffering. When you look at his clothes you can see that he is all in black, this could represent tough and anger and also someone who will be able to stand up for himself and who will not take any mess from no one. Also when we look him he looks loyal, like he would run to anyone’s side if they asked and this would make people feel safer. This makes the tension rise, because he has so many sides to him and that he could change at any moment into someone else, someone that you would never recognise.

In this image I can Denote that something might be about to happen, and I can Connote that wherever he is he is in a dark place.

Media Studies: Task 3:

Media Studies: Task 3:

When looking at this image the first thing I can see is that it is meant to scare people, but not enough to not make them watch the film, just enough to make the film see like it is worth watching. This is a Mid shot this is because it shows the people sat in the middle but it also shows the background and this adds to the tension that the movie poster is trying to build. For this image you could use the Rule of Thirds this is because it is using the main image which is the people cradling each other as if their lives depended on it. This shot doesn’t really show the peoples reaction, but this just adds to the tension because they could be happy or they could be scared. But by looking at their body positions you can see that they are scared and also like they have been running from something which is making them fear and become scared.

From this image I can see that it is a Close-Up this is because it is mostly based on the people in the middle and their reactions to what they seem to be hearing or being told. This image is really clear at it shows the peoples emotional wellbeing. The meaning of this still image is to make the people feel like something shocking has just been discovered, and because the image is just focused on them, it makes this more or a personal shot and makes it effect people more often than it should because it makes it feel like is happening to them too.

The focus of this image is that these three people have just entered a house, and they look intrigued. Because it might seem different from other houses that they might have seen. The colour it looks plan, suggesting that someone older chose this colour, it adds to this thriller because you don’t know who lives there. When looking through the door its like the house is in the middle of no where and this links to the genre thriller because it is mysterious because you want to know why it is there. When you look at the three people its like they are looking out for each other. The camera shot is a Mid Shot this is because it shows the peoples face expressions and shows how they are reacting to entering this house.

When I look at this image I can see that it is a Close-Up how I know this is because it is just focussing on the peoples faces. By the way then are looking at something fully might suggest that they have just heard some news which they didn’t want to hear also that they might be listening out for something instead. By the way the little girl is holding the man this would suggest that this is his daughter and either her mother has passed away or that she is just not there at this moment in the film. This image seems clear which makes you think that this film was made in the last few years, and because of the way their faces are looking up suggests that they are looking at a bulleting board or a TV.

When I look at this image I see that it is a Close-Up this is because it is showing the peoples reactions and how they are coping with the situation. When you look at the background it looks like it might be a basement this is because it looks quite run down and like someone hasn’t put a lot of love to the room. By the way they are holding the little girl suggests that her dad has died and that they have been given the responsibility of looking after her. Because they don’t look happy this might suggest that they think this is the end and that they don’t think they are going to overcome this problem. But what ever happens they die as a family.

Media Studies ISL Task 1.

Media Studies: ISL Task 1:

Rule of Thirds:  When composing a shot imagine a grid over the top. The Rule of Thirds would probably be used for a scenery scene.

The Golden Mean: When composing a shot imagine a diagonal line over the top of it. The Golden Mean would be used for showing animal features.

Composition: Where objects are placed over or arranged in a shot.

Framing: It means which you decide to use in a shot when filming.

Long Shot: This would probably happen next to a building to show how high it might be. It also might be used for looking at someone from afar, to show the background behind her.

Extreme Long Shot: This would probably be used for showing someone is travelling a long distance.

Mid Shot: It would probably be used for seeing someone in the flesh like they are talking to them and we need to see their reaction. An example, of this is maybe a conversation.

Medium Close-Up: This would be used for someone who is having a conversation with another person or something else.

Close-Up: It would be used for example if someone is fighting with someone else an example of this is a western movie.

Extreme Close-Up: This would be used for a fight scene to maybe in a western movie.

Cut Away: Something that is used to take your eyes away from what is really happening in the scene.

Two Shot: This is when two different people are in the shot; this is mostly used for interviews.

Over The Shoulder Shot: This would be used to show someone’s reaction and someone actions movements.

Noddy Shot: This is mostly common in interviews.

Point of View Shot: This would be how someone sees an object it is a personal shot.
