Analysing ‘Memento’

The film ‘Memento’ is a Physiological Thriller the reason why i think this is because of the different features that it contains; it also contains a lot of different emotions which will keep the audience on the edge of their seats.

When the film first begins we feel a sense of mystery and confusion, we can conote this because of the sound which builds in the opening scene, keeps people wanting to know what will be happening next. The simple effective font adds to the mystery, this is because it is bold and is clear, suggesting that something is going to happen which you wouldn’t except to happen, but when it does it will shock everybody. 

The different camera shots add to the tension of this film. In the film ‘Memento’ it jumps from clip to clip, this is too adds tension, and makes people confused by what is really happening in the story. When the image goes to black and white it is suggesting that he is talking about his past, and his feeling during that time before he lost his memory, and also lost his wife.    

The music is a Non-Digetic this means it has been placed on top of the film itself. This sound adds tension to the film; from this I can infer that something is going to happen, something that might have had a big affect on a person’s life. The sound which i could notice more was the ticking of the clock in the background this connotes that time is pasting by, this links to the drone in the background suggesting that because he has no memory, that his life is over. That all he can remember is hatred for someone he can not remember.

When the scene begins we see black and white, which connotes that time has passed by but also it adds to the tension suggesting that he doesn’t know where he is and anything which might have happened. This makes the audience feel sorry of him because they want him to be able to remember the one thing he wants most in all the world.       

The fact that he places tattoes on his body, telling him of the next thing in his case to fine his wifes murderer. This makes people feel sorry and want to help him. Also when we the audience knows who the murderer is you just want to scream and yell and hope he hears you.
